Tuesday, October 7 from 3pm to 4pm

Join Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a book club gathering. This month, we will discuss the novel, The Lions of Fifth Avenue, by best-selling author Fiona Davis, which tells the story of two women – Laura in 1913 and her granddaughter, Sadie, in 1993, who independently investigate a series of rare book thefts. The story encompasses family ties, lost dreams, and redemption that comes from discovering the truth. Attend in-person at the Margate Library Meeting Room, 8100 Atlantic Avenue, Margate. Shutting the Gate: Origins of the Quota-Based System for Eastern Europeans, Jews, and Italians

Wednesday, October 8 from 10:30am to 12pm

Join Professor Jack Pesda to learn about the historical times and conditions in the United States that led to the quota-based immigration system of the 1920s. Join Village Film Enthusiast & Historic Cinematic Buff Tom Celandine and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a discussion of the motion picture, The King’s Speech, which tells the story of the unexpected ascension of George VI to the English throne and the extraordinary friendship he forms with a speech therapist who uses unconventional means to assist the monarch in covering a speech impediment. Available for free at the Ventnor and Margate Libraries. Available with a subscription fee on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango, and Google Play Movies, Hulu, Roku Channel, Starz, and YouTube. The Basic Beliefs of Islam: A Secular Scholarly Discussion

Join Professor Jack Pesda as he leads a class on the basic beliefs of Islam using the Quran, which serves as a comprehensive guide for Muslims, encompassing laws, moral codes, and spiritual teachings. Also, the discussion will encompass the conflicting views of later day followers. The Quran is written in classical Arabic and is renowned for its linguistic beauty and eloquence, which serves as a religious text and significant work in Arabic literature, influencing language and culture. Experience the thrill of capturing life’s adventures, history, and ancestry with the Memoir Workshop led by award-winning author and Drexel University Director of Certificate Program in Writing and Publishing, Harriet Levin Millan. Brunch & Learn: David Denby’s ‘Eminent Jews’ Bernstein, Brooks, Freidan, Mailer

Brilliant, brash, and yet soulful, Leonard Bernstein, Mel Brooks, Betty Friedan, and Norman Mailer were 100% Jewish and American. Downton Abbey & The British Nobility and Manorial System: Part 2

As she draws from her extensive research for an upcoming book, retired professor and author Ellen Hernandez continues a journey into the past. In Part 2, we will explore the history of the British system of nobility, how the Jewish population fit into it, the British manorial system through post WWI, the roaring 20s, and the adaptation of the nobility through the Progressive Era, pre-World War II, and the Depression.
