The Lynn Kramer Village by the Shore at Jewish Family Service offers cool programs during the hot summer season. Here’s your chance to participate in eight fun, unique and entertaining programs in July.
Thoughts from the Bookshelf
Tuesday, July 1 from 3pm to 4pm
Join Thoughts from the Bookshelf Facilitator Pat Goldstein and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a book club gathering. This month, we will discuss the book, Educated, by Tara Westover. The memoir focuses on personal growth, self-discovery, and resilience when a young woman, kept out of school, leaves her Mormon survivalist family and embarks on her education where she earns a Ph.D. from Cambridge University. Attend in-person at the Margate Library Meeting Room, 8100 Atlantic Avenue, Margate. RSVP by June 30.
Village Film Society
Tuesday, July 8 from 10:30am to 11:30am
Join Village Film Enthusiast & Historic Cinematic Buff Tom Celandine and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a discussion of the movie, My Cousin Vinny, about an inexperienced New York attorney, Vinny, representing his cousin, Bill, and friend, Stan, who were falsely accused of committing murder in a small Alabama town. The movie stars Ralph Macchio, Joe Pesci, Fred Gwynne, and Marisa Tomei, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in her role. Available for free on Tubi, and at the Ventnor and Margate Libraries. Available for a fee on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Fandango, Google Play Movies, Hulu, and YouTube. This program is via Zoom and a link will be emailed. RSVP by July 3.
Lunch Around Town
Thursday, July 10 from 12pm to 1:30pm
Enjoy a leisurely lunch with friends while supporting a local restaurant. This month, we will dine at Fitzpatrick’s Deli & Steakhouse, 650 New Road, Somers Point. Come prepared for good food and conversation. Order off the menu and pay individually. RSVP by July 8.
Brunch & Learn: Margins of Memory – Forgotten Voices
Wednesday, July 16 from 10:30am to 12pm
This program will explore the rich, yet often overlooked, history of the Roma and Sinti people of Europe. From their migration out of northern India, to their diverse cultural traditions across the continent, they have long-faced marginalized, persecution, and harmful stereotypes. We will highlight their contributions to society by tracing their resilience, cultural identity, and on-going fight for recognition, while confronting dark chapters of history. This program offers a deeper insight into one of Europe’s most misunderstood and enduring communities. Attend in-person at Beth El Synagogue, 500 North Jerome Avenue, Margate. RSVP by July 8.
Village Goes to the Ventnor Farmers Market
Friday, July 18 from 8:30am to 12pm
Come visit or volunteer at the Village informational table at the Ventnor Farmers Market, located on New Haven and Atlantic Avenues in the St. James Church parking lot. Meet, greet, and share your enthusiasm for Village events and services as you enjoy sunshine and shopping from local farmers and vendors.
Musical Connections
Wednesday, July 23 from 1pm to 2pm
Feel the stress of the day peel away as we share familiar tunes from various genres (Broadway, Classical, Contemporary, Jazz and more) and instruments with friends and neighbors. Whether you are a caregiver, cared for, or just a community member, we look forward to welcoming you. Attend in-person at the Ventnor Library, 6500 Atlantic Avenue, Second Floor, Ventnor. RSVP by July 18.
Throwback Thursday: The Lost Shuls of the Pine Barrens
Thursday, July 24 from 10:30am to 12pm
Join Jewish Federation of Atlantic & Cape May Counties Executive Director Rachel Waldman, Board of Jewish Education Executive Director Josh Cutler, and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota as they host a captivating journey into the forgotten Jewish past of South Jersey’s most unexpected regions. This program will focus on uncovering the stories of small, often hidden synagogues and Jewish communities that once dotted the Pine Barrens – built by immigrant farmers, peddlers, and Holocaust Survivors – who sought refuge and community. Discover how faith, memory, and identity were preserved in wooden shuls, nestled among cranberry bogs and pine trees and why their stories continue to matter today. Attend in-person at Beth El Synagogue, 500 North Jerome Avenue, Margate. RSVP by July 17.
