Thoughts from the Bookshelf

Join Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a book club gathering. This month, we will discuss the award-winning novel, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, by James McBride. This 1920s and 1940s story, set in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, showcases a vibrant community where Jewish and African American neighbors lived side by side sharing ambitions, despite facing personal struggles and systemic prejudice. Memoir Workshop

Now is the time to tell your story like you have never told it! Experience the thrill of capturing life’s adventures, history, and ancestry with the Memoir Workshop led by award-winning author and Drexel University Director of Certificate Program in Writing and Publishing, Harriet Levin Millan. Downton Abbey & the British Manor Home: Part 1

Join author and retired professor Ellen Hernandez on the week of the wildly anticipated opening of the historical drama, Downton Abbey, The Grand Finale. In Part 1, Ellen will take attendees on a journey to explore the history of British nobility and how the Jewish population fit into it as well as the British manorial system through the Gilded Age, Edwardian Era, and World War I. Brunch & Learn: Untold Truths – Native American Histories

Join us for a powerful lecture that uncovers buried chapters of global history which is aimed to spark reflection, raise awareness, and honor historical truths often left untold. With a doctorate in history from Lehigh University, Dr. Calvin Tesler is an adjunct professor at Stockton University specializing in Holocaust history, American urban and colonial history, and Native American studies. Join us for an educational brunch program, followed by an optional bus tour departing from the Jewish Community Center, to explore the Sam Azeez Museum of Woodbine Heritage. Stress Test: Global Religious Repercussions of War
Tuesday, September 30 beginning at 6pm
The Sara & Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center will host a lecture with Dr. Carol Rittner where she’ll discuss her new book, Stress Test: The Israel-Hamas War and Christian-Jewish Relations, which encompasses 12 world-renown American Christian scholars and teachers as they explore how the ongoing conflict has strained Christian-Jewish relations.
