Embracing Food Security for All

At JFS, we are dedicated to ensuring that no one in our community goes hungry. However, 1 in 8 adults experience food insecurity in Atlantic County. As the need for food grows, nutrition services becomes an even greater focus for JFS. JFS is enhancing its services by adding a comprehensive, multi-tiered strategy to ensure food security for all. To support this effort, the JFS Food Security Initiatives Department was established to expand and enhance the operations of our food pantry and related services. Our goal is to offer more than just meals—we strive to create sustainable solutions that empower people to achieve stability and self-sufficiency.

In 2025 and beyond, JFS will prioritize enhancing food security and improving access to nutritious food for local residents, with a special focus on Atlantic City. As a designated food desert, Atlantic City faces critical challenges, including limited availability of affordable, healthy food and a food insecurity rate of 22%— more than double the statewide average. Our goal this year is to assist over 3,500 Atlantic City residents; distributing 10,000 pounds of fresh produce, and reducing both the city and county-wide food insecurity rate. JFS remains dedicated to addressing these inequities and fostering the health and well-being of this underserved community.

This includes hiring a program Director, two Food Security Case Managers, and a Food Pantry Associate. Additionally, 100 volunteers contribute approximately 300 hours to ensure the pantry is well-organized, fully stocked, and that food is delivered to those in need.

The department operates through three primary components: ongoing food distribution, a mobile food pantry, and case management to address complex challenges.
1. JFS will own and operate a fully equipped mobile pantry. With the acquisition of a custom designed food truck, JFS will travel throughout the Atlantic City area to distribute fresh produce, proteins, and other essential items—at no cost. The mobile pantry will meet residents at convenient locations, such as schools during student pick-up times and workplaces when employees finish their shifts. Additionally, JFS will provide free “on-the-go” bags designed for individuals experiencing homelessness, offering fresh, ready-to-eat foods that require no preparation.

2. We know that turning to JFS for food is typically the tip of the iceberg and more than 60% of JFS clients receive in additional supports. The implementation of food-oriented case management services will assist individuals with wraparound services. JFS case managers focus on assisting clients with applying for food benefits such as SNAP and WIC, providing transportation to grocery stores, working through nutritional information and choices that may not have otherwise been available, and helping individuals with any other needed services that could be of use and ultimately lead to food security.

3. As always, the Food Pantry in Margate is open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 3 PM, serving all Atlantic County residents with non-perishable, fresh and frozen offerings as well as basic necessities, diapers and wipes. For case managers meeting clients in the community, JFS stocks food at its Atlantic City and Cape May County offices for easy access. In addition, bimonthly Atlantic City food distributions take place in the parking lot of 26 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, Atlantic City for any individuals needing food, fresh produce and bread. JFS staff are onsite to assist with other related needs and referrals.

Through these initiatives, JFS aims to alleviate the burden of food insecurity across Atlantic City and Atlantic County.
