Echoes of Empire: Unraveling the Dynamic History of Russia & Ukraine – Three-Part Series

Thursday, May 1, 8 & 15 from 10:30am to 12pm each day

Join us for one, two or all three programs with Dr. Jack Pesda, Ph.D., who specializes in Russian economic history. Dr. Pesda will share the complicated history of Russia and Ukraine from the Romanov Dynasty to present. Beverages and pastries will be served. Attend in-person at the Katz JCC Boardroom, 501 North Jerome Avenue, Margate. RSVP by April 25.

Thoughts from the Bookshelf

Tuesday, May 6 from 3pm to 4pm

Join Thoughts from the Bookshelf Facilitator Pat Goldstein and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a book club gathering. This month, we will discuss the novel, The Ladies’ Midnight Swimming Club, by Faith Hogan. The uplifting story brings together three women at different stages of life united by the chance to begin enjoying life to the fullest again. Additionally, we will discuss the award-winning novel, The Dictionary of Lost Words, by Pip Williams. The book focuses on historical events surrounding the compilation of the Oxford English Dictionary, WWI, and the women’s suffrage movement. Attend in-person at the Margate Library Meeting Room, 8100 Atlantic Avenue, Margate. RSVP by May 2.

Memoir Workshop

Friday, May 9 from 10:30am to 12pm

Now is the time to tell your story like you have never told it before! Experience the thrill of capturing life’s adventures, history, and ancestry with the Memoir Workshop led by award-winning author and Drexel University Director of Certificate Program in Writing and Publishing, Harriet Levin Millan. Learn about publishing your work. A laptop or pen and paper is needed for the workshop. This program is via Zoom and a link will be emailed. RSVP by May 7.

Lunch Around Town

Monday, May 12 from 12pm to 1:30pm

Enjoy a leisurely lunch with friends while supporting a local restaurant. This month, we will dine at The Queen Bean Bistro, 4800 Boardwalk (Vassar Square), Ventnor. Come prepared for good food and conversation. Order off the menu and pay individually. RSVP by May 9.

Village Film Society

Tuesday, May 13 from 10:30am to 11:30am

Join Village Film Enthusiast & Historic Cinematic Buff Tom Celandine and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a discussion about the movie, Twelve Angry Men, starring Henry Fonda, Ed Begley, and Jack Warden. The film tells the story of a sequestered all male jury who will decide the fate of an inner city teen accused of murder. As they try to reach a unanimous decision, one juror casts doubt. The movie is available for free on Pluto, Tubi, and at Atlantic County Libraries. Also available to rent on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Google Play, Hulu, Roku, and YouTube. Relaxation Through Musical Connections

Monday, May 19 from 1pm to 2pm

Feel the stress of the day peel away as we host a relaxing session with a music therapist who will play instruments and familiar tunes. Village Goes to the Ventnor Farmers Market

Friday, May 23 from 8:30am to 12pm

Come visit or volunteer at the Village informational table at the Ventnor Farmers Market, located on New Haven and Atlantic Avenues in the St. James Church parking lot. Meet, greet and share your enthusiasm for Village events, programs, and services as you enjoy sunshine, sea air and an opportunity to shop from local farmers and vendors. Admission is free.

Memory Café: Ocean City

Tuesday, May 27 from 10:30am to 11:30am

Caregivers and their loved ones living with Dementia are invited to join Village and UMC representatives in a Dementia friendly space. Experience creativity and social connections through art, music, gentle movements, and more. Attend in-person at the Ocean City Free Public Library, 1735 Simpson Avenue, Ocean City. RSVP by May 21.

Downbeach Film Debut & Director Discussion: Alliance

Thursday, May 29 beginning at 6:30pm

Join us for the Downbeach premier of an incredible film, Alliance, about 43 Jewish immigrant families fleeing Russian tyranny in 1882 and settling in the desolate woods of South Jersey. This improbable story follows the settlers who knew nothing about farming and against all odds, claimed land, harnessed its bounty, and built a legacy that would be reborn six generations later. A panel discussion with Film Director Susan Kehnemui Donnelly and Dr. Tom Kinsella, Professor & Director of the Alliance Heritage Foundation, will follow the screening.
