“Pieces of Hope” - A Wellness & Recovery Conference

for Case Managers, Social Workers, Families & Consumers

Jewish Family Service will hold its annual “Pieces of Hope” Wellness and Recovery Conference on Thursday, June 10, 2010 at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.  Beginning at 9 am, this unique conference offers a variety of educational workshops conducted by our area’s most respected professionals. Peer Specialists Tabitha Montalvo and Dave Sholler will serve as keynote speakers. Admission is $15 per person which includes breakfast and lunch. CLICK HERE to register securely.

WORKSHOPS

MHA Christine Gromadzyn:  “Toolbox” (10:30 am & 1:45 pm - Room W104)
This workshop will discuss the importance of having tools and resources to stay well. Participants will leave with toolboxes to assist in the ongoing journey to wellness. The workshop is geared to consumers, families and professionals confronting mental health symptoms, stress or burnout.

NAMI “In Our Own Voice” (10:30 am & 1:45 pm - Room W123)
This is a “recovery education” program designed to bring audiences the facts about living with and recovering from severe mental illnesses. This workshop covers issues frequently faced by people with these conditions including dark days, acceptance, treatment, coping strategies, successes, hopes and dreams.

Kelly Celano:  “Budgeting” (10:30 am & 2:45 pm - Room K141)
The focus of this workshop will be to educate consumers on matters of personal finance, including establishing a budget, debt management and building savings. This session will provide a list of community resources that may be helpful in meeting financial goals.

Sharon Simon, The Rothenberg Center for Family Life at Jewish Family Service:  "Coping with Anger & Other Emotional Responses" (10:30 am  - Room WQ103)
Learn how to handle and express anger and other emotional responses in healthier ways.  The workshop provides an opportunity to examine how emotion is process, giving an inside look at what makes you "tick" and techniques for handling situations that "tick you off."  Everyone can benefit from learning positive practices to manage the stressors of day-to-day.

“Yoga” (10:30 am - Sports Center)
Yoga is a system of exercise including meditation, postures and breathing to promote healthy and calm body, mind and spirit.

Kimberly Raring:  “Eating for Health and Energy” (10:30 am - Room K102)
Explore how the types of food you eat and the pattern of your eating each day has an impact on your health, energy and healing. Learn how to be kind to your self through your food choices.

John Garafano & George Brice:  “Strategies for Telling and Supporting Recovery Narratives from the Lens of Wellness” (11:30 am & 1:45 pm - Room WQ103)
This workshop will share a strategic way to organize and deliver your personal narrative from the lens of wellness rather than illness. The session will assist in how to support consumers’ narratives through stakeholders such as mental health consumers, family members and providers.

Dr. Marjeen Stokers-Monroe:  “Dental Health” (11:30 am - Room K102)
This workshop focuses on the importance of oral hygiene to overall health, emphasizing prevention and regular care as an important aspect of healthy living.

Theresa Maddox:  “Creative Expression” (11:30 am & 1:45 pm - Room K141)
This workshop will focus on the use of non-verbal forms of expression such as music, movement and painting to promote self-discovery, reduce stress and enhance pleasure.

Michelle Zechner:  “Building Hope and Resiliency” (11:30 am - Room W123)
Hope is important to recovery and staying positive. Being hopeful can help people be resilient and cope.  This workshop explores what makes you find hope and how you can build more hope in your life.

Debra Silver:  “Caring for Caregivers” (11:30 am - Room W104)
View your mind, body and spirit as an integrated system. Please unpack your responsibilities at the door, as we ignite feelings of empowerment. Join a supportive community of caregivers as we explore ways to bring well-being into our lives. Dress for comfort.

Jallah Kennedy:  “Men’s Health” (1:45 pm - Room K102)
This workshop will touch on topics of diet, exercise, weight, blood pressure, sexually-transmitted diseases and body parts.  Find the answers for how diseases occur in men and how to live longer and healthier lives.

Shelby Broughton:  “Chi Kung and Tai Chi for Health & Vitality” (1:45 pm - Sports Center)
In Chinese, “Tai Chi” means “balance and harmony.” It is both movement and meditation through a widely practiced form of ancient Chinese self-care.  This workshop will be teaching a sense of well-being through movement.

Debra Silver, BS, Jewish Family Service:  "Stress Management" (2:45 pm - Room W103) Release stressors, tension and anxiety from your life.  This workshop will help you acquire new tools for living using mindfulness-based techniques.  Be prepared to discuss ways that will help you live in greater ease and balance every day.

Adria Light:  “Meditation” (2:45 pm - Room W123)
Take a breather from daily stress. Learn some easy techniques to stop mid-stress and return to calm, clear thinking.  Feel yourself filled with a sense of peacefulness.

Maggie Weaver:  “Diabetes Education” (2:45 pm - Room W104)
This session is an informal workshop for diabetics, friends and family. This workshop provides an overview of diabetes and explores the 7 self-care behaviors with an emphasis on healthy coping.

Jallah Kennedy:  “Quit Smoking” (2:45 pm - Room K102)
It can be difficult to quit smoking but there are many ways to get help. This workshop will help to guide smokers as to how to quit, ultimately decreasing health concerns, cancer risk and spending.
