Help JFS Reach Our Goal of $20,000 to Feed Familes throughout the Holidays

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties hosted its Annual Turkey Drive to provide Thanksgiving and holiday meals to hundreds in our community. This year, JFS collected $18,000 more than tripling last year’s fundraising total. These donations enable the agency to feed approximately 720 families throughout the holiday season however the agency is still collecting non-perishable canned goods and monteary donations in hopes to reach $20,000 by the end of 2010.

“The generosity of our community never ceases to amaze me”, said JFS Executive Director Andrea Steinberg. “Our food pantry needs have more than tripled in 2010. The tremendous support of this year’s drive allows us to provide food for the holidays as well as throughout the winter.”

In early October, James Klinghoffer offered a generous donation which kicked off the drive. Once again, Barbara Altman dedicated her birthday radio broadcast on Friday, November 19 to the JFS food pantry.  Listeners of WOND’s The Front Porch responded by donating $1,000 plus non-perishable food and trimmings to the drive. In addition, MYoga Studio and the JCC Thanksgiving Day Challenge with Lisa Bee donated the proceeds from their classes. Fox Rothschild, coordinated by JFS President, Eric Wood, once again held an office-wide collection adding to the success of the Turkey Drive.

In addition to the monetary donations, non-perishable food collections at the ten Ocean City Home Bank branches as well as JCC Early Childhood Preschool and the William H. Ross School in Margate filled the on-site pantry shelves.

“JFS is serving more than 2,500 individuals and families this year and thanks to dozens of food drives throughout Atlantic County the shelves in our pantry are full of healthy and hearty food options as the winter approaches,” said Leigh Turner, Community Initiatives Coordinator. “A special thanks goes out to our community partners and volunteers who helped collect, sort and stock the pantry.”

The Food Drive will continue throughout the end of the year. Here are ways the community can help:

1.     Make a donation of $25 or more to purchase a Holiday meal for a family in our community. Donations can be made online.

2.     Donate canned goods.  Non-perishable food donations such as cereals, hearty soups, tuna fish and pasta offer our clients a balanced diet throughout the year.

3.     Spread the word.  Enlighten your neighbors, friends, family members, colleagues and Facebook friends about the JFS Food Pantry.

Make a monetary donation through our secure online Holiday Donation page here. Jewish Family Service accepts non-perishable food donations throughout the year.  If you have a question regarding the JFS Food Pantry or how you can assist, please contact the agency at 609-822-1108 or email.
