Jewish Family Service & Katz JCC Host Race to Nowhere Screening

The acclaimed documentary Race to Nowhere will be presented by Jewish Family Service of Atlantic & Cape May Counties (JFS) and the Milton & Betty Katz Jewish Community Center on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at Mainland Regional High School.  The film begins at 6:30 p.m. with an informative panel discussion to immediately follow.

This compelling film features the stories of young people in all types of communities who have been pushed to the brink, educators who are burned out and concerned that students aren’t developing the skills they need, and parents who are trying to do what is best for their kids.

“As a mother, I experienced the stress firsthand and realized that no one was talking about it, said Race to Nowhere filmmaker Vicki Abeles. “I felt compelled to speak out about this crisis by making a film and giving voice to the students, teachers and parents.”

Race to Nowherepoints out the societal pressures that have caused cheating to become commonplace and students to become disengaged stressed and depressed.  The documentary is a call to mobilize families, educators and policy makers to challenge current assumptions on how to best prepare the youth of America to become healthy, bright, contributing citizens.

“The Race to Nowhere is another inconvenient truth. It’s a wake-up call to all of us who

care about children, the purpose of schools, and how we define success in American education,
explained The George Lucas Educational Foundation. “And, importantly, it provides viewers with excellent, actionable suggestions of how to begin to address change locally in our schools.”

Teachers, parents and students are encouraged to come see why hundreds of theatres, schools and organizations nationwide are hosting community screenings. Advanced tickets are available for $10.  Tickets purchased at the door are $15 each. To purchase tickets click here or call 609-822-1108.
