Atlantic City High School Welcomes JFS Get Skilled: Coaching Champions

The Rothenberg Center for Family Life, the educational arm of Jewish Family Service (JFS) is proud to announce that Atlantic City High School will conduct Get Skilled: Coaching Champions (GSCC) program for their Boys Basketball Team. GSCC was specificallydesigned to promote positive school athletic programs in line with the State’s recently enacted Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights.

Adolescent athletes can become champions or fall prey to the negative philosophies pervading today’s youth sports programs.  While school athletic programs generally are not included in school anti-bullying policies, the competitive nature of these programs has a high potential for “bullying” atmospheres.  National Youth Sports Foundations have found that while coaches are experts in their respective sport specialty, most have little or no training in adolescent developmental behaviors.

“Through the Get Skilled: Coaching Champions program, our Atlantic City High School coaches, parents and students will develop positive communication skills,” explained Donna L. Haye, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction. “Our students will be trained to handle stressful situations and learn techniques to display positive behaviors while becoming leaders in their school and community.”

Thanks to the donation of a local business owner, Get Skilled: Coaching Champions workshops will begin this month for the ACHS Boys Basketball Team. This interactive training program for coaches, athletes and parents focuses on modifying detrimental behaviors, strengthening emotional/relational health, modeling positive communication skills and developing buffers against bullying. The five workshop program integrates life skills to teach techniques that motivate rather than demoralize, respectful ways to voice opinions and helps participants become strong role models

“Recognizing that funding for school and community athletic programs are at an all-time low, JFS is seeking funding to provide this program to additional sports organizations at no cost,”  said Sharon Simon.
