Susan G. Komen ® Central and South Jersey Affiliate Funds JFS Women’s Health Network for Seventh Year

Posted on July 10, 2017

For a seventh year in a row, Jewish Family Service has received funding from the Central and South Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen® to help fund the agency’s Women’s Health Network. JFS founded the Women’s Health Network years ago to offer breast health awareness and reduce barriers to mammography diagnostic screenings. Each year JFS has demonstrated its ability to ensure that a growing number of women receive life-saving access to breast health education and screenings.

Through the support of the Network’s nurse navigator and JFS case managers, nearly 3,000 women have learned risk factors associated with breast cancer through educational workshops and personalized consultations since the program’s inception in 2011. More than 1,100 of these women have received potentially lifesaving mammograms and follow-up diagnostic tests. By promoting education, JFS increases participation in annual and diagnostic breast cancer screenings among women age 40 and older.

“The impact of this program is immense and reaches women in Atlantic County, many of whom would not attend to their breast health without JFS’ Women’s Health Network,” says Sharon Simon, Director of Women’s Health Network.

Recently, JFS was able to facilitate a breast screening on the AMI Foundation's Dr. Jan Astin Mobile Mammography Van for a woman who had been diligent about obtaining annual mammograms until four years ago when her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was so involved in caring for a sister who lived an hour away that she was neglecting her own health.  Through the Network’s nurse navigation services, this woman had the support to obtain a mammogram and was relieved to learn that the results were negative.

JFS would not be able to provide this type of early intervention without funding from the Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate. As a Visionary Donor of the agency, the Affiliate has provided more than $400,000 in funds to JFS over the last seven years through its Community Grants program. This past year JFS was also invited to participate in a South Jersey Breast Health Disparities coalition represented by a cross section of county agencies/medical centers, which is being led by the Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate to reduce breast cancer mortality.

As a Komen grantee, JFS supports the Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey Race for the Cure® scheduled for Sunday, November 5, 2017, at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ.  Please join JFS and the Susan G. Komen Central and South Jersey Affiliate in our mission to help save lives and end breast cancer by signing up as a walker, runner or donor at www.komencsnj.org/race.
