Jewish Family Service (JFS) selected Richard Gitlen, MSW, LSW, as Chief Operating Officer for the non-profit agency. He will be responsible for continuing and building on the vision and strategic direction of JFS and providing leadership to establish and maintain the agency as a premier provider of Mental Health services through best practice initiatives, new approaches to service delivery and growth expansion of services. As COO, Rich will oversee agency operations and select program areas.

“JFS Board and Staff are excited to add Rich to our team.  His background and experience are a great fit for the organization now and moving forward,” said Andrea Steinberg, CEO.

Rich has more than 40 years’ experience working with children and families in the Philadelphia region.  Before coming to JFS, Rich served as the Executive Director of Lutheran Children and Family Service by virtue of his role as Vice President of Community Service for Liberty Lutheran Services. Rich’s past Board work included roles as Vice Chair of YouthBuild Charter School, Vice Chair of the Board of Directors on the Pennsylvania Council of Children, Youth and Family Services and leadership roles with other community Boards. His social work practice has always centered around three principles: advocacy, empowerment and resource development.

“I am very excited about continuing my professional work here at JFS as it matches my passion for serving the most vulnerable in our community driven by the principles of faith,” said Gitlen.

With a BA degree from Pennsylvania State University and a Master’s in Social Work from Temple University, Richard Gitlen started his career as a teacher before working with children and families in Philadelphia. Rich is also an active supporter of youth education and development as he remains on the Board of Friends of YouthBuild and his commitment to the needs of immigrants and refugees resettling in our communities.
