JFS Community Garden Planting Day April 24th
Posted on April 09, 2015
Jewish Family Service invites community members to participate in the Community Garden Planting Day on Friday, April 24th at the JFS garden located in Pleasantville. Beginning at 10 am, individuals are welcome to help prepare the garden for the upcoming season. Volunteers will help pull weeds, clean-out flower beds and plant the early crops, including lettuce, radishes and beets. This is a hands-on day, so attendees should dress accordingly. JFS will provide gloves and all necessary tools.
Now in its second year, the JFS Community Garden in Pleasantville, funded by AtlantiCare’s Growing Green initiative, was created to improve the nutrition and physical activity of the community and to encourage social interactions among mental health consumers.
The JFS Community Garden is part of the agency’s Health and Wellness Initiative. Throughout the year, the agency also partners with AtlantiCare to offer ongoing health and wellness events for consumers, including a healthy dinner made with vegetables from the Community Garden as well as nutrition workshops.
“The JFS Health and Wellness Initiative provides numerous benefits to our consumers such as physical activity, interaction with peers and healthy lifestyle education,” said Andrea Steinberg, CEO of Jewish Family Service. “It is amazing once given the right tools and knowledge how minor changes in diet and activity significantly increase the quality of life for these consumers.”
To help raise additional funds to support the JFS Health & Wellness Initiative, the agency partnered with Cookie Till, owner of Steve & Cookie’s By the Bay, for a one of a kind Herb Dinner. This year’s Herb Dinner, to be held on October 7, 2015 at 6 pm at Steve & Cookie’s By the Bay, offers a three-course vegetarian meal made with seasonal herbs and vegetables perfectly complimented with red and white wines. Tickets are $100 per guest and seating is limited. Reservations can be made online.
