JFS Women’s Health Network Receives Fourth Year of Program Funding

Posted on June 28, 2014

Jewish Family Service of Atlantic and Cape May Counties Women’s Health Network reaches a record number of women in Atlantic County each year.  With its fourth year of funding from the Central and South Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen®, the Network will continue to provide breast health awareness and reduce barriers to mammography and diagnostic screening compliance. As a Visionary Donor of the agency, the Central and South Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen® has provided more than $200,000 in funds to JFS over the last four years.

Since the program’s inception in May 2011, JFS has touched the lives of more than 1,200 women with at least 400 women receiving potentially lifesaving mammograms and follow-up diagnostic tests. By promoting consumer compliance, JFS increases participation in annual and diagnostic breastcancer screenings among women between the ages of 40 and 64 who are medically underserved. In its fourth year, the JFS Women’s Health Network aims to provide annual and diagnostic breast screenings to 130 women and breast health education to more than 300 women.

“Many women in Atlantic City, particularly those who are homeless or have no medical insurance, would not be aware of the importance of breath health and annual mammography compliance without JFS’ Women’s Health Network,” says Sharon Simon, Director of Women’s Health Network.

Recently, the Network was able to provide breast health awareness education and facilitate a base-line screening on the Mobile Mammography Van at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission to a 52 year old woman who cycles in and out of homelessness.  This woman, who did not have a permanent address, identification, insurance or a primary care physician had virtually no access to proper health care including breast screenings. A Network nurse helped her obtain an identification card, linked her to a primary care physician and arranged for a follow-up mammography at Atlantic City Regional Medical Center. This would not have been possible without funding from the Central and South Jersey Affiliate of Susan G. Komen®.
