JFS High Holiday Food Drive Collects 500 Bags of Food for Pantry
Posted on October 20, 2014
The Jewish Family Service Food Pantry is a well-known resource not only in the local community but for all Atlantic County residents. The Food Pantry typically serves approximately 200 families per month, however due to the recent casino closures in Atlantic City that number is and will continue to increase.
Community food drives help sustain the food pantry, and the High Holiday drive is the largest of the year for the agency. Throughout the holiday, members of Congregation Beth Israel, Beth El Synagogue, Congregation Beth Judah, Temple Beth Shalom and Temple Emeth Shalom donated non-perishable goods and other food items for the JFS Food Pantry, collecting approximately 500 bags of groceries to benefit local families in need.
“It is always wonderful to see the community come together and support each other, especially during challenging times,” said Leigh Turner, JFS Community Initiatives Coordinator. “These essential food items will significantly help to supplement the food pantry until Thanksgiving.”
With the generous rental donation from Just 4 Wheels, JFS was able to significantly fill an oversized moving truck with groceries. Donated food included top JFS necessities such as pasta and sauce, peanut butter, tuna fish, hearty soups and cereal.
“Our pantry has become a vital resource for those in the community and winter months tend to be the busiest due to the holidays,” said Andrea Steinberg, Chief Executive Officer of Jewish Family Service. “With the recent local economic downturn, this year’s High Holiday food drive was very important as we will serve hundreds of individuals and families in the community over the next couple of months.”
With many more community members needing assistance this year, JFS expects a significant increase in requests for Thanksgiving and holiday meals. Throughout the fall, JFS will be collecting monetary donations to provide holiday meals to families in need. A $30 donation to JFS will allow the agency to purchase a turkey and trimmings for a family’s holiday dinner. Canned goods and non-perishable items such as cranberry sauce, corn, stuffing and other necessary staples are also needed.
Turkey Drive donations can be mailed to JFS 607 North Jerome Avenue, Margate, NJ 08402 or made securely online at www.jfsatlantic.org. Non-perishable food donations can be dropped off directly at JFS.
