The Rothenberg Center for Family Life, the educational arm of Jewish Family Service (JFS) is proud to announce Get Skilled: Coaching Champions (GSCC), a program to promote positive school athletic programs in line with the State’s recently enacted Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights. School athletic programs generally are not included in school anti-bullying policies. The competitive nature of school sports programs has a high potential for a “bullying” atmosphere.  National Youth Sports Foundations have found that while coaches are experts in their respective sport specialty, most have little or no training in adolescent developmental behaviors.

“The rules of the game have changed dramatically and Atlantic County coaches need new tools to provide positive experiences for our student athletes,” said Jason Kaye, Champions of Youth founder for the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City and local basketball coach.

Get Skilled: Coaching Champions is a positive skills training program for coaches.  GSCC lays the framework of fundamental communication, motivational and team building strategies that help coaches develop player performance, respect and trust within the context of their individual coaching style.  The program incorporates the “six pillars of character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship,” which is part of the Arizona Sports Summit Accord (http://josephsoninstitute.org/sports/resources/accord/index.html).  The basic curriculum consists of two 90 interactive coach training sessions and can be expanded to include sessions for players and/or parents. Training topics include player goal setting and evaluation, speaking to the play not the player, developing accountability and ownership, balancing player commitment, ability and play time, and setting positive limits and relationships with athletes’ parents.

Our goal is to offer GSCC to as many sports organizations as possible in Atlantic and Cape May Counties.  The Center is looking for sponsorship to bring this program to the community.
